PRAY BEFORE YOU READ THIS THAT YOUR MIND MIGHT BE OPENED TO THE TRUTH

TRUTH – WHAT IS IT AND WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT???

WHAT IS TRUTH???

Truth is The Word of God

SPOKEN – HEARD – KNOWN

Are there such things as absolutes?

Gravity, absolute freezing, etc. all around us, there are easily recognizable absolute truths What Truth can you stand on? What is the Rock that you hold onto in times of trouble??

Psalms 92:15 ...proclaiming, "The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him."

Psalms 94:22 But the LORD has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.

Psalms 95:1 Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.

1 Corinthians 10:4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.

The truth that there can be no other foundation than Christ.

1 Corinthians 3:11 "For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ."

The Truth that only what the Lord builds will stand.

Psalms 127:1 "Unless the LORD (Lord in Greek is Kurios – The One in Supreme Authority) builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain."

This foundation and building must be rooted in the Word of God, which is God – which is Truth.

John 17:17 "Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth."

Once we are walking in Christ – in the truth – and have a firm footing on the foundation that comes from knowing the Lord by spending time in His Word, in prayer, praise, and worship, we can begin to grow out of our child-like faith and begin a steady and strong relationship with our Lord. We all pray to have that fire in our bellies that gives us the zealousness to pursue, love, and praise God at every turn. What we fail to realize is that, if we have no sound foundation and are living only because of another's faith or teaching, that same fire will burn the flesh by which we are living. The smell of burning flesh will allure those who smell the same and offend everyone else. However, if your faith is set in the immovable foundation of Christ, then your fire will burn the Holy Incense in you and will attract everyone with its sweet smell.

2 Corinthians 2:14 "But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him."

Hebrew Truth

Our ordinary understanding of the English word "truth" fails to do justice to what is described in the Hebrew Scriptures. In its various forms, "truth" is used over one hundred times. There is is rendered with several connotations: firm reliable, solid, faithful, tested, perceptible, true and lasting. Generally, the Hebrew word designates a reality, which is firm, sure, authentic and unchanging. While the Hebrew word "emeth" is used as a legal term, it can also indicate a validity beyond the area of law. This reference is to facts which always demand recognition by all men as reality.

This recognition of the eternal reality of God's Word and Law is expressed in Psalm 119: 160; and Psalm 19: 9. This eternal truth is the source of real knowledge, and in that truth there is trust and confidence hich is expressed in Psalm 31: 5, revealed in Isaiah 45: 19 and invoked in Isaiah 65: 16. On appeal, moral and legal standards are guaranteed as the goal of divine action in Exodus 34: 6. As the foundation of such truth, God is worthy of our total devotion. "The works of His hands are truth and right, and all His commands are unconditionally valid".  His words are trustworthy and true precisely because He is God!

Greek Truth

The Greek word aletheia has an original meaning of non-concealment. It indicates a state of being that can be seen, indicated or expressed. This state can, when it is disclosed, indicate the real or absolute state of

affairs in legal, historical and philosophic use.

In our time, we may well speak of this idea of true truth in the words of Francis Schaeffer. While the Old Testament is not so much concerned about raising the question of what is truly true, there is the sense that what God is and says is truth. This idea is wholly compatible with the Greek ideal, "since in the practice of history and in historical and philosophical enquiry, it is essentially the task of the logos to reveal and indicate, aletheia can also denote an aspect of the logos".9 Aletheia thus denotes a normative absolute that requires action based upon the full understanding of disclosed knowledge. For this reason aletheia is pregnant with the sense of "correct doctrine", because this shows what the truth is.10 Once the truth is known, action on that truth as an act of obedience conveys a sense of accepting the "authoritative teaching". In this way, truth and law can become joined in correct doctrine.

In the New Testament, the word may convey the following meanings:

1.it is that which "has certainty and force".

2.it can also have the meaning of "judicial righteousness."

3.it often takes on the weaker sense of "uprightness".

4.it is also that "on which one can rely".

5.it may also signify "sincerity" or "honesty".

6.it implies the "real state of affairs".

7.it is used as "statement of truth".

8.it is also the "true teaching or faith".

9.it can also mean "genuineness, divine reality or revelation".

Discerning the Truth About Scripture!

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

  • 2He was with God in the beginning.
  • 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
  • 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
  • 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
  • 6There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John.
  • 7He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.
  • 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
  • 9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
  • 10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.

John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

John 10:30 I and the Father are one...

Matthew 11:27 "All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

John 17:11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name--the name you gave me--so that they may be one as we are one.

John 17:21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

1 Corinthians 2:13  This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.

  • 14The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.
  • 15The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment:

Hebrews 4:12  For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work

James 1:19  My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,

  • 20for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.
  • 21Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
  • 22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
  • 23Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror
  • 24and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.
  • 25But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it--he will be blessed in what he does.

Discerning the Truth About...

We are going to study the Word to see what can be said about some of the moral and ethical dilemmas we find in today's society. Lyndsay and I will be doing The Deity of Jesus, Doubting, and Music. (distinguish, determine, press out)

John 15:26 "When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.

John 16:7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

John 17:17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

John 10:30  I and the Father are one

John 1

  • 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
  • 2He was with God in the beginning.
  • 3Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
  • 4In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
  • 5The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood [2] it.

  • 8He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
  • 9The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
  • 10He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
  • 11He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.
  • 12Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God--
  • 13children born not of natural descent, [4] nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
  • 14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
  • 15John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, `He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'"
  • 16From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.
  • 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Doubting!

Mark 9:14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them.

  • 15As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.
  • 16"What are you arguing with them about?" he asked.
  • 17A man in the crowd answered, "Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech.
  • 18Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not."
  • 19"O unbelieving generation," Jesus replied, "how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me."
  • 20So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.
  • 21Jesus asked the boy's father, "How long has he been like this?" "From childhood," he answered.
  • 22"It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us."
  • 23"`If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes."
  • 24Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!"
  • 25When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the evil spirit. "You deaf and mute spirit," he said, "I command you, come out of him and never enter him again."
  • 26The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, "He's dead."
  • 27But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.
  • 28After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"
  • 29He replied, "This kind can come out only by prayer."

2 Chronicles 7:14 ... if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Matthew 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

John 20:24 Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.

  • 25So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it."
  • 26A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!"
  • 27Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe."
  • 28Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"
  • 29Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
  • 30Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.
  • 31But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Acts 17:27 God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.

  • 28`For in him we live and move and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, `We are his offspring.'

Galatians 4:7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

  • 12Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.
  • 13You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

James 1:2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds,

  • 3because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance.
  • 4Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
  • 5If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
  • 6But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
  • 7That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord;
  • 8he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.
  • 9The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position.
  • 10But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower.
  • 11For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business.
  • 12Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

Music!

Psalms 98

  • 1Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.
  • 2The LORD has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations.
  • 3He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
  • 4Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music;
  • 5make music to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing,
  • 6with trumpets and the blast of the ram's horn-- shout for joy before the LORD, the King.
  • 7Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.
  • 8Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy;
  • 9let them sing before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity.

Psalms 150

  • 1Praise the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.
  • 2Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.
  • 3Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre,
  • 4praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute,
  • 5praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals.
  • 6Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD.

Psalms 42

  • 1As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.
  • 2My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?
  • 3My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, "Where is your God?"
  • 4These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng.
  • 5Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and
  • 6my God. My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon--from Mount Mizar.
  • 7Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.
  • 8By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me-- a prayer to the God of my life.
  • 9I say to God my Rock, "Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?"
  • 10My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, "Where is your God?"
  • 11Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

Matthew 21:9 The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Hosanna in the highest!"

Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship.

  • 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.

1 Corinthians 16:14 Do everything in love.

1 Corinthians 13

  • 4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
  • 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
  • 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
  • 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
  • 8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
  • 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part,
  • 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears.
  • 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.
  • 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

Acts 16:25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.

Romans 15:9 ...so that the Gentiles may glorify God for his mercy, as it is written: "Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles; I will sing hymns to your name."

Ephesians 5:19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord,

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

Wasting time is just as hurtful to the Kingdom of God as not doing what is right and true – God's desire.

Wasting time is defined as not adding goodness to your like in order to bless others.

John 12:3 Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped

his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

2 Corinthians 2:14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him.

2 Corinthians 11:13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ.

  • 14And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.
  • 15It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

Fragrance in = fragrance out / world in = world out

=>we ingest with our eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and touch. We cannot explain what we have not experienced in the natural – therefore we can believe that we must experience the spiritual in the same manner in order to share it. What we allow into our hearts and minds will come out. If we do not believe in our hearts (there is no change towards the holiness of God)– our listening, seeing, physical, etc. habits, behaviours, and actions will not change.

Deuteronomy 30:14 No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.

Job 22:22 Accept instruction from his mouth and lay up his words in your heart.

Proverbs 15:14 The discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly.

Matthew 12:34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.

Matthew 15:18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man `unclean.'

Luke 6:45 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks.

Truth of God's Word Concerning Abortion

22"If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman's husband demands and the court allows.

23But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life,

24eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

Deuteronomy 32:6

Is this the way you repay the LORD, O foolish and unwise people? Is he not your Father, your Creator, who made you and formed you?

Ecclesiastes 11:5

As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed [1] in a mother's womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.

1.5 Or know how life (or the spirit) enters the body being formed

Isaiah 29:16

You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay! Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, "He did not make me"? Can the pot say of the potter, "He knows nothing"?

Isaiah 44:2

This is what the LORD says-- he who made you, who formed you in the womb, and who will help you: Do not be afraid, O Jacob, my servant, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.

"This is what the LORD says-- your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the LORD, who has made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself,

Romans 9:20

But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? "Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, `Why did you make me like this?'"

Galatians 4:19

My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you,

Would you consider abortion in the following 4 situations?

1. There's a preacher and wife who are very, very, poor.  They already have 14 kids. Now she finds out she's pregnant with 15th.  They're living in tremendous poverty.  Considering their poverty the excessive world population, would you consider recommending she get an abortion?

2. The father is sick with sniffles, the mother has TB. They have 4 children. 1st is blind, 2nd is dead, 3rd is deaf, 4th has TB. She finds she's pregnant again. Given the extreme situation, would you consider recommending abortion?

3. A white man raped a 13 year old black girl and she got pregnant. If  you were her parents, would you consider recommending abortion?

4. A teenage girl is pregnant. She's not married. Her fiance is not the father of the baby, and he's very upset. Would you consider recommending abortion?

In the first case, you have just killed John Wesley. One of the great evangelists in the 19th century.

In the second case, you have killed Beethoven.

In the third case, you have killed Ethel Waters, the great black gospel singer.

And most of all...........

If you said yes to the fourth case, you have just

declared the murder of Jesus Christ !!
